BLACK ORPHEUS SUITE (1959 - Antonio Carlos Jobim/Luis Bonfá, Arr. D. Costa)
Winner of both the Academy Award for Best Foreign-Language Film and the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or, Black Orpheus (Orfeu Negro) brings the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice to the twentieth-century madness of Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. Filmed in Brazil by French director Marcel Camus, the film is heralded for introducing the world to two young composers - Antonio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfá - and a new style of music known as Bossa Nova. The soundtrack became an inspiration to many of the top jazz musicians of the day. Selections include: O Nosso Amor, A Felicidade, Frevo, Manha de Carnaval, Samba de Orfeo.
