PORGY & BESS SUITE (1935 - George Gershwin, Arr. D. Costa)
George Gershwin’s masterpiece and only opera was set in the 1930s in an African-American Charleston neighborhood known as Catfish Row. Porgy and Bess centers on the tragic love story of the cripple beggar Porgy and beautiful Bess. The full-length opera first premiered in Boston in 1935 and then went on to Broadway. Many of the songs have become well known jazz standards and it is estimated that “Summertime” has been recorded over 25,000 times. For this recording Dennis plays a Gibson L-50 archtop guitar made in 1935, the same year as the composition. Selections include Summertime; I Loves You Porgy; There's a Boat Dat's Leavin' Soon for New York; Bess, You Is My Woman; My Man's Gone Now; It Ain't Necessarily So.
